When it comes to parties, ESPECIALLY parties on a tight budget, I am all about doubling up. Examples of doubling up include using a decorated cookie as a place card, a party hat as both table decor and a party favor, etc. By focusing on giving most of your party elements multiple purposes you can save money and make a really thoughtful, memorable party.
For this post I am going to be showing you 3 ways that you can double up the food/desserts you are serving at your party as decorations that tie into the theme.
- Presentation – The way you arrange and present your food can make a HUGE difference. Take the 7 layer dip shown below for example, all it took was simply shaping it into a butterfly and BOOM it becomes an additional table decoration that fits with the fairy theme. Other examples I have below are sour candy belts on a kabob stick to double as seaweed decor for a mermaid party, and pineapple dishes served with the crown of the pineapple at the center to enhance the tropical theme and serve as a center piece decoration as well as food.

2. Signage – You can take ordinary food/refreshments and make them themed decor simply by adding a clever name card in front of them. For example, for the mermaid party I did I named a cute bowl of goldfish “Flounder’s friends”. A little signage can go a long way – bonus points for adding in some sort of pun 😉

3. Add A Little Something Extra – Sometimes a little cupcake topper or thoughtful dab of frosting can bring your food table to life. In the example below, I cut out pineapple crown tops, taped them to toothpicks and stuck them into the top of donuts to turn them into tropical decor in addition to a tasty treat.
